Compressor specs

Post by dwf2008 »

Is this compressor

Suitable for painting my airplane?
I am new to this, never used a spray gun before so I don’t expect it to be perfect.
Thanks

I'm not sure, your spray gun should say what sort of SCFM and pressure it needs, then look at the compressor specs and make sure it's sufficient. (Although this is not super easy because HVLP guns use low pressure, which means the compressor can supply more air. Typically SCFM is specified at high pressures, like that one is 5SCFM at 90psi, 6.3 SCFM @ 40 PSI) A quick google got this: "HVLP, or High-Volume/Low Pressure, uses a high volume of air (typically between 15-26 CFM) delivered at low pressure (10 PSI or less at the air cap)". So that's probably going to be marginal.

Of course, as a beginner you probably won't be spraying continuously, so the compressor will have time to catch up. But it's also absolutely no fun to have a too-small compressor that runs continuously especially if you're in the same room. It also makes the compressor run very hot. I don't know how long you can expect a HF compressor to last, but hopefully it would at least get you through the paint job...
