TSI opinions for mountain flying/high altitude

Post by kirbmart1000 »

Hello all. I have the opportunity to acquire a very nicely built Sling TSI. My home field is at 7,500 ft and I'm surrounded on 3 sides by mountain passes 12,000ft+. I'm looking for opinions on how it will do at high altitude. I know the 915 is full power up to 16,000ft but wanted some first hand feedback on flying high/mountain flying in the TSI.

Hi There! I built and now fly my Sling TSi out of Centennial Airport (KAPA) in Colorado into the mountain airports.
I'd say you're not going to have many worries about performance, even on high-density altitude days, within reason.

I regularly see climb rates all the way up to 17.5k ft at over 1000ft per minute. That's with 2 people and full tanks.
If fully loaded, performance may drop after 14k ft to about 800ft per minute.

Thanks astampa, this is super helpful feedback, my home airport is KANK, in Colorado. My other concern is the weight, it’s pretty light so I'll feel turbulence more. Pretty windy here all winter/spring.

Oh it'll do just fine out of KANK...

Got any hangars over there? :)
