Picking up kit?

Post by lutorm »

So my slow-build kit (10 crates) has arrived at the distributor in the Netherlands and I've been quoted ~$5000 for trucking the kit from NL to my location in the middle of Sweden, a trip of 1800km (~1100 miles.) I'm toying with the idea of renting a truck and picking it up myself, which appears like it would be substantially less expensive, but it's a long trip and it looks like for the spars to fit in the cargo area it has to be like the largest truck you can drive on a normal license.

I'm leaning towards just paying for the trucking, but since it's more than twice the cost for the kit to ship from SA to NL I find it a bit galling. Has anyone trucked their own kit and can share their experience. What vehicle did you use, how hard was it to fit the kit and how did you on/offload it?

I'm waiting on my kit to also arrive in NL and haven't done anything about shipping to Ireland yet - which is a lot further. Yikes!
Mine is a quickbuild - so more space needed.

FYI - I'm flying out to NL to visit the ABE folks in a couple of weeks.

Let me know how you get on please.

Well, I ended up paying for the truck, it was too painful to organize a pickup. It was delivered today. :D

Is that the entire kit? Just wanting to understanding what my kit will look like when it arrives. I ordered the entire TSi flat pack kit. Thanks.

That is the entire kit, yes. Only the Rotax and propeller should be missing. And the parachute, I guess, as I'm going without that.

In order from closest to far away, those crates are the: wing, fuselage, canopy/finishing, undercarriage, empennage, FWF, wing spar, and (not visible) the pushrod and longeron tubes.
