Static Wicks (dischargers) Installation #slingsupport
Static Wicks (dischargers) Installation #slingsupport
I haven't seen any static wicks on any Slings yet and for any planning IFR in precipitation, those are pretty well a must. What make/models of static wicks are planned? How many installed? If installed on flight controls, those would have to be bonded (wire)... #slingsupport

Hi,
You are correct in that there are no static wicks on the aircraft at the moment. We are currently testing the use of static wicks on the aircraft, namely on the wing tips and the top of the rudder (x3 wicks in total).
The wicks can be mounted to the top of the rudder, and the tip of each aileron (ensuring good electrical contact). The ailerons and rudder will then need to be tethered to the wing / empennage with a short piece of braded wire, to ensure good electrical connection to the airframe.
The wicks we are testing, and suggest for use, are available on Aircraft Spruce:
ESD-1 STATIC WICK NON-CERTIFIED
Spruce PN: 11-10574

Re: Static Wicks (dischargers) Installation #slingsupport
Hi,
Thanks for the comments. Will there be any guidance from the factory on how to install these, or would the standard method of adding nutplates along the rear/outboard rudder and aileron rivet lines and screwing them in suffice?

Hi,
Using nutplates would allow easy servicing (replacing) of the static wicks, and would be the preferred method if the control surfaces (rudder / ailerons) are still open. If they are closed (assembled) then make use of blind rivets, they will fulfill the same purpose.
Correct, add the wicks to the most outboard rib rivet line on the aileron, and the top most rivet line of the rudder. Ensure that the control surfaces is electrically bonded with braded ground cable to the main body of the wing.

I am adding the static wicks and I am about to paint.
I cannot find any control balance data. Is there any data published?

Good morning everyone,
Here is a recent follow up that I received from Sling Technical for my TSi below:
Hi Steve,
We have unfortunately stopped testing.
You are more than welcome to fit some on your aircraft, but we do not have any further data.
We recommend that you place them on the same location that we have on the HW;
On the ailerons and flaps towards the wing tips (both wings) and on the rudder.
Kind regards,
